Our goal in developing MaxPatrol was to create a professional, reliable and easy to use Enterprise Class Security Scanner that not only checked the operating system for patches and updates, but applied intelligence to detecting vulnerabilities in the application layer and the web based applications as well. The primary architects of MaxPatrol were not programmers, but information security experts who recognized the need for a best of breed, reliable and affordable tool that IT Professionals could use and understand. The scanner had to take into account the need to test a host as a whole. This philosophy would ensure security administrators had a full picture of the hosts security posture. The main focus was Quality of Result; could a software tool be designed to simulate a human, Zero Knowledge Attack at all layers of the host? After working with attack matrixes of all types and testing algorithm after algorithm the security experts working closely with the programmers had devised a method of that could, in fact, not only determine the existence of known vulnerabilities, but also discover, yet unknown ones as well! MaxPatrol uses intelligent algorithms and heuristic methods for vulnerability detection that correspond as closely as possible to real-life attempts at compromising network security. It uses the same methods a hacker would use, identify, enumerate, define and attack, and it does it faster and more accurately than a human intruder.
